Local Activities

All of the following local activities are open to anyone interested and do not require medieval dress. Our “events” are also open to anyone but do require medieval dress. Loaner clothing can be arranged for our local events for those who do not have any yet, but it is best to ask in advance because our supply is very limited.

Newcomers’ Meeting — 3rd Wednesday of the month, at the Fighter Practice location, Bethesda Lutheran Church, (455 Island Pond Rd, Springfield, MA 01118). This meeting is mostly a time for new people to ask questions, but sometimes we have structured classes. The classes are sometimes geared specifically toward new people, other times it is a class that can teach a new skill to even long-time members.

Bardic Night — Occasionally, as schedules permit, Sir Tommaltach and Baroness Fiona open up their home for a night of song and story. These evenings generally occur on the 3rd Friday of the month at 7 PM, at their ‘castle’, Caer Leonis. The location and directions are posted to the Bergental mailing list. No need to be a bard, either! The songs and stories are medieval, medieval-ish or SCA specific. Some write their own stories, poems, songs. Some of us just read fairy tales out of books and some people just are good listeners.

Open Studio Nights — Generally held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 7 – 9 PM, at Sarah Strong’s sewing studio in Hadley, MA. A chance for people to bring projects they are working on, chat, and help each other. Contact Sarah on the mailing list to let her know you will be coming, as well as for directions there.

Fighter Practice — Normally every Wednesday of the month at 7 PM, Bethesda Lutheran Church, (455 Island Pond Rd, Springfield, MA 01118). The main purpose is for practice of our specific martial (“pertaining to war”) arts, including what we call “heavy” combat, using rattan weapons, as well as rapier combat, with fencing foils, but people who don’t participate in the fighting also go to the practice just the chat or work on projects. Notices will be posted to the Bergental mailing list when there are changes in the practice schedule.

Scribal Workshops — The scribes and illuminators of Bergental sometimes come together to work on scrolls, learn new techniques from each other, or just practice. Newcomers are always welcome, and will find there are even tasks that they can accomplish with little instruction. Times and locations will be published to the Bergental mailing list.
